Advice, Guides and Buying Hints:

Philips 32PF9996 Review LCD Flat-panel - by Philip Ryan
Philips helped to start the flat-panel TV craze years ago with its plasma commercials, and the company has always tried to position its sets as leaders in design. The 32PF9996, a 32-inch LCD, is no exception. While it is a matter of taste, it's arguably as stylish as models such as the Samsung LT-P326W, and its built-in Ambilight backlighting will definitely turn heads when you turn it on. In terms of performance, this Philips's black level and color temperature are clearly better than those of many panels we've tested. However, the real question is whether you're willing to fork over the extra dough for this Philips over a budget model such as Syntax's Olevia LT32HV. (Added: 22-Nov-2005 Hits: 81 )

Philips 42PF9996 Reviews. LCD Flat-panel - by Kevin Miller
Although it looks just like many other 42-inch flat-panel TVs in stores today, Philips's 42PF9996 has two characteristics that should make its $9,999 list price seem a bit more palatable. One is that it uses LCD technology, joining other sets such as the Sharp LC-45GX6U, the Samsung LTP468W, and the Sony KDL-42XBR950 to challenge plasma for big-screen flat-panel supremacy (see our comparison). The other is Philips's unique Ambilight feature, which consists of a pair of customizable fluorescent lights that illuminate the wall behind the TV. During testing, we discovered that the 42PF9996 performed surprisingly well in some key performance areas, but at the same time, it lacks a couple of features that keep it from earning our highest accolades. Samsung LT-P326W Review Flat-panel LCD TV - by David Katzmaier
Samsung is among the leaders in flat-panel computer monitors, and it's making a big push to topple Sharp in the flat-panel LCD TV market, too. The LT-P326W is a significant threat to Sharp's industry-leading LC-32GD4U, and although its image quality isn't quite as good, it offers a wider connectivity suite and slicker styling. If price is your first concern, you'll probably be happier with a no-name 32-inch set such as the Olevia LT32HV or the Kreisen KR-320T. This Samsung strikes a happy price medium between those sets and the Sharp, although we do wish it cost a couple hundred dollars less. (Added: 22-Nov-2005 Hits: 76 )

Sharp LC-37D7U LCD Television Reviewed - by Philip Ryan
Sharp wowed us last year with its LC-32GD4U and continues to do so with the new LG-37D7U ($5,499 list). Like its smaller cousin, this 37-incher boasts a full-fledged feature set, a slick design, and solid performance, including nice deep blacks (for an LCD) and clean video processing. All of that helps make the latest Aquos a tempting target for high-end LCD shoppers, but bargain-hunters and people who prize home-theater image quality will likely opt for plasma at this screen size. Sony KDL-32XBR950 Review - LCD Flat Panel - by Philip Reid
More than any other company, Sony seems to realize that flat-panel TVs offer new opportunities to dress up the old boob tube. Maybe that's why the "floating glass" design that graces its most expensive plasmas has trickled down to LCD-based flat-panel HDTVs. At $5,999 list price, the 32-inch KDL-32XBR950 is no bargain, but its looks alone will win plenty of converts among the Robb Report set. A high-end feature package puts this TV squarely on a par with the well-executed Sharp LC-30HV6U, but its out-of-the-box, home-theater picture quality doesn't measure up. A professional calibration, on the other hand, works wonders. Like a finicky sports car, the KDL-32XBR950 needs a pro's hand to run its best, but in the end, it's one of the better LCDs we've reviewed. (Added: 22-Nov-2005 Hits: 79 )
